Home Campus Safety Violence Prevention Emergency Preparedness
  • Sexual assault is the forcing or coercing of sexual activity
  • 35 out of 1,000 women have been a victim or attempted victim
  • Many women do not consider what happened to them as rape due to:
    o Embarrassment
    o Not understanding legal options
    o They blame themselves
o Not wanting to be labeled as a "rape victim"
  • A study conducted in 2000 showed that 9 out of 10 rapes of female college students were committed by people the victim knew.
  • The study also showed that the majority of rapes took place after 6pm, 60% took place at the victim's residence, 31% took place at another housing location on campus, and 10.3% of incidences took place at a fraternity.
  • Fewer than 5% of the completed rapes were reported to law enforcement
